Abstract

1,128,142. Brakes; friction clutches. J. L. BEZEMEK. 30 June, 1966, No. 29333/66. Headings F2C and F2E. A wear indicating device for a friction member 12, for example a friction member 12 in an internal shoe drum brake 11 or a clutch (Figs. 2, 3, not shown), comprises a conductive region 16 partially or fully embedded in the friction member. The conductive region is connected in series to an electrical indicator means 26, a battery 27 and earth, the conductor 21 extending through an insulating bushing 23. The friction member co-operates with a relatively non-wearing surface of an earthed electrically conductive member, e.g. a brake drum 14, such that, when the friction member is worn down to the conductive region the electrical circuit is actuated to operate the indicator means. The conductive region underlies substantially the whole wearing surface of the friction member or is arranged in such a pattern that the conductive region will sweep over substantially the entire portion of the non-wearing surface which is opposed to the wearing surface. As shown the conductive region comprises a strip 12 which is arranged in a groove in the friction member and is insulated from and bonded to the brake shoe 13 by a layer of electrically insulating bonding 19.
