Abstract

1360768 Brake or clutch lining wear indicators; friction clutches SOC ANON DBA 9 April 1973 [5 May 1972] 16953/73 Headings F2E and F2C In a wear-detecting device for a friction lining carried by a backing plate of a brake or clutch, one end of a metal wire having a flexible insulating cladding is secured in an insulated manner in an opening in the backing plate and adapted to contact a metallic friction surface engaged by the lining when the latter reaches a predetermined thinness, thereby closing an electric circuit including a warning device, the said one end of the wire being covered up by an insulating end piece provided with a sleeve portion adapted to be mounted and retained in the opening; the "insulating cladding" is a cylindrical sheath surrounding the wire, the "end piece" being moulded or stuck on to the sheath. As shown, the device, applied to a spot-type disc brake, is located to one side of the lining 12. The cylindrical sheath is shown at 24. The end piece 26 has a thin portion actually covering the end 28 of the wire and sheath, and is formed with a shoulder 34 and a retaining collar 30. A groove 32 is provided behind the collar 30 so that the collar may be resiliently deformed for insertion into opening 16 from the face 20 of the backing plate opposite to that carrying the lining.
