Abstract

1,128,051. Gear pumps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Aug.22, 1965 [May 24, 1965], No.21817/65. Heading F1F. To reduce the tendency towards cavitation in a gear pump having a pair of intermeshing gears 12, 13, Fig. 2, with teeth of involute form and inlet and outlet ports 18, 19 respectively, shown shaded, in an end face of the pump body 10, in one or both ends of the gears, there is a hole 20, Fig. 3, for each tooth, preferably at the root thereof, extending from the face of the tooth facing the inlet to the trailing edge of the tooth. This permits entry of liquid to a tooth space which is about to communicate with the inlet and assists filling of this space to eliminate vapour therefrom and thus reduce cavitation.
