Abstract
1,126,552. Crimped staple fibre. FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc. 26 May, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 23554/66. Heading B5B. Crimped staple fibre is made from synthetic thermoplastic polymer filaments which exhibit asymmetric birefringence differentials across their diameters, by cutting the filaments into staple fibres, and feeding this into a stream of an unreactive gas heated to a temperature above the second order transition temperature of the polymer, but below its m.p., the stream of gas having a sufficient velocity to maintain the fibre in suspension, and the fibre being kept in suspension until it becomes crimped. Polyethyleneterephthalate is exemplified, using air as the unreactive gas at 140-180‹ C. Other polyesters are also mentioned. The filaments used in the process may have been obtained by conventional spinning, but with an asymmetric cooling step included. In the examples the filaments are drawn before being cut and crimped.
