Abstract

1370216 Crimpable filaments AKZO NV 15 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 28067/72 Heading B5B A crimpable filament consists of a single melt-spinnable synthetic polymer wherein the solution viscosity of the polymer varies continuously across the fibre. As illustrated in Fig. 3(a), the solution viscosity profile is asymmetrical. Such filaments may be produced by use of a spinneret such as is shown in Fig. 1. Here, the molten polymer, supplied by duct 1<SP>1</SP> to filter plate 5, then passes through a heating element holding plate 7 into primary duct block 4. In this block there are formed primary ducts 10 which convey the polymer to the spinneret plate 3. Eccentrically placed in ducts 10 are heating elements 11 which more strongly heat, and consequently reduce more the viscosity of, the polymer nearest to them. The spun filaments may be stretched and heated to develop the crimp. The process is illustrated for polyethylene terephthalate.
