Abstract

1,125,955. Non-woven fabrics; shrinking fabrics. WEST POINT MFG. CO. 10 Sept., 1965 [10 Sept., 1964], No. 38830/65. Headings D1R and D1S. Non-woven fabrics are impregnated with a heat-curable binder of natural rubber or synthetic resin, dried, subjected to mechanical compressive shrinkage before the binder is fully cured, and heated to cure the binder whilst held in the compressed state. If the binder is thermoplastic before curing, it will soften during heating to adjust to the rearrangement of fibres during the shrinkage. The fibres of the fabric may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon-6, nylon-66, polyethylene terephthalate, wool, cotton, acrylics, modacrylics, polyurethane, rayon or acetate rayon, and may be formed into a web by air-blowing, carding or cross-laying. Binders referred to are self-curing acrylic copolymer latices, "Hycar" (Trade Mark), and natural rubber The binder may also contain marble dust, zinc oxide or finely divided clay to reduce tackiness. The binder may be wholly uncured or partly cured before shrinking, or a first increment of binder may be applied and cured and a second increment applied but not cured before shrinking. The shrinking may be done on a two-drum shrinking machine.
