Abstract
112,547. Imray, O., (Bosch Magneto Co.). March 17, 1917. Magneto-electric machines for igniting in mul. tiple-cylinder internal-combustion engines. To produce four or more flux changes per revolution of the armature, two or more magnets 6, 7 are arranged side by side with the long limb of one magnet adjacent the short limb of the other so that the pole-shoes 8<1>, 8<11>, 9<1>, 9<11> are displaced circumferentially around the armature 2; the pole shoes have the same axial width as their respective magnets so that the fluxes are kept separate. The magnet 6 is wider than the magnet 7 so that it may surround the armature cover 15 and condenser. An interrupter 11 with four cams and a distributor 16 are mounted on the armature shaft; a brush 14 engaging the cover 15 connects the armature core with the magnet frame. To prevent flux leakages, the magnets may be separated by non-magnetic material 20 and the armature core may be in two parts separated by non-magnetic material 19. In a modification for producing six impulses per revolution, three magnets are arranged side by side with their pole-shoes 60 degrees apart. Fewer sparking voltages may be obtained per revolution by providing fewer cams on the interrupter. Distributors of the ordinary type, or main and auxiliary distributors, may be employed.
