Abstract

1,124,165. Making transformers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 10 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 45181/66. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H1] Pressure rings 22 (Fig. 1) for transmitting pressure from clamping means 30 to clamp the coils 20 of a transformer (see Division H1) are formed of wound metal strip bent to V-shape cross-section (Fig. 4) to prevent the rings from telescoping during winding. Each ring is formed by winding cold rolled grain-oriented or hot rolled non-oriented magnetic strip on a mandrel until the desired diameter is reached, then the ring is secured by spaced radial welds 38 and annealed. A radial out is made through the ring, the cut edges etched to remove burrs, then the gap is filled with epoxy resin 40 to prevent the ring from acting as a shorted turn. Epoxy resin is also brushed on both sides of the ring, penetrating between the convolutions, and several layers of polyester- or epoxy-glass or other high tensile tape may be wrapped around the circumference of the ring to further secure the ring and to prevent the convolutions from splitting.
