Abstract

Means for damping a surface subject to flexural vibrations, which damping means comprises a damping layer of mechanically extensible and contractable polymeric viscoelastic material applied by spraying or troweling to form a coating of substantially uniform thickness and bonded to the surface, the polymeric viscoelastic material having a density substantially less than that of standard density material of like composition, and having a Young's modulus of elasticity that is related to the modulus of elasticity of the standard density material substantially in accordance with the formula <FORM:1124125/B1-B2/1> in which E\sv2=Young's modulus in lbs in2 of the standard density damping material P\sv2=density in lbs in3 of the standard density damping material E2=Young's modulus in lbs in2 of the sprayed or troweled viscoelastic damping material P2=density in lbs in3 of the sprayed or troweled viscoelastic damping material W1=weight in lbs in2 of the material of the surface to be damped W2=weight in lbs in2 of the sprayed or troweled viscoelastic layer P1=density in lbs in3 of the material of the surface to be damped; and in which the loss factor of the damping material does not vary appreciably with the actual changes in density of that material. The surface may be the hulls of submarines and surface vessels and in the example the coatings are applied to a steel plate. The damping material may be polyvinyl chloride/acetate copolymer plasticised with butyl benzyl phthallate having a filler e.g. flake graphite and carbon black.
