Lubricant additives have the formula <FORM:1123845/C4-C5/1> wherein each of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 is H, C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy, halogen, CO2H or CN.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1123845/C2/1> wherein each of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 is H, C1- 4 alkyl or alkoxy, halogen, CO2H or CN, and a process for making them by reacting the corresponding phenol with trichloromethyl-oxiran.ALSO:Compounds of formula:- <FORM:1123845/A5-A6/1> wherein each of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 is H, C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy, halogen, CO2H or CN, are stated to be useful as agricultural chemicals, particularly bactericides.
