Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and G1] In machine tools in which fluid pressure operated actuators are controlled in a predetermined sequence to move tools or transport workpieces to successive machining stations, each actuator comprises a piston 4 of ferromagnetic material slidable in an aluminium cylinder 1 having a pair of longitudinally adjustable electromagnetic transducers (see Division G1) mounted in housings 48 clamped to the exterior thereof, whereby each transducer emits a considerably increased electrical signal when thepiston is in alignment therewith for causing operation of solenoid valves controlling the sequential operation of the actuators. Each end of the cylinder 1 is closed by a cover 13 or 14 secured in position by bolts 26 passing through bores 25 therein into threaded bores 24 provided in a sleeve 21 surrounding the cylinder 1 and prevented from sliding in one direction therealong by half rings 20 fitted into an external annular groove in the cylinder 1. The actuator may be mounted on pedestals 41, 42 clamped to bosses 43, 44 provided on the covers 13, 14. A pneumatic circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), is described in which two actuators are arranged to operate in a predetermined sequence by applying the electrical signals derived from each transducer to a control box containing amplifiers and memories which cause predetermined operation of a pair of solenoid operated reversing valves controlling the supply of gas to each actuator.
