[Also in Division H1] Apparatus for simultaneously magnetising and cold rolling a magnetisable polymeric strip comprises a pair of rollers, and four electromagnets, one on each side of each roller. In Fig. 1, strip 23 is compressed by rollers 20, 21 which may rotate at the same or different speeds and may have off-centred axes. Electromagnets 40-13 are wound to provide a magnetic field in the direction of the arrows. The strip may be passed through several pairs of rollers, to reduce thickness gradually (Fig. 3, not shown). Electromagnets 40-43 may be replaced by four iron cores each having D.C and A.C. windings (Fig. 5, not shown) so controlled that the D.C. and A.C. fields are applied to the strip either simultaneously or alternately (by rapid switching). Alternatively, the strip may be passed through two sets of rollers, the first in an A.C. field and the second in a D.C. field (Fig. 6, not shown). The A.C. field is said to agitate the particles, and the D.C. field to orient and magnetise them. The strip may be formed by extrusion.
