Abstract

1432969 Permanent magnets H SPODIG 3 July 1973 [3 July 1972] 31697/73 Heading H1P A composite permanent bar magnet comprises a column of two or more permanent plate magnets of hard magnetic material, e.g. ferrite alternately assembled with intermediate plate magnets of highly permeable soft magnetic materials, e.g. soft iron in juxtaposition to form an easily magnetizable N-S bar magnet unit; the permeability and coercivity of the first material being respectively lower and higher than those of the second material. Specifically anisotropic barium oxide ferrite magnets are formed as square plates of similar cross-section interposed with soft iron plates and the pack has a central bore for securing into a unit. Alternatively the plates may be circular. Plural such columns may be combined into a single unit, with a ferromagnetic return path. Curves are given illustrating the magnetic performance for different magnetic materials and for different thicknesses of the component bars or plates.
