In obtaining a filtered sample of liquid for analysis in order to check progress in a chemical reaction, a leaf filter element with one pervious wall 1 is immersed in liquid to collect filtrate in its chamber 2, which filtrate is then expelled by compressed air from supply 4 which simultaneously backwashes the wall 1. The filling of chamber 2 may be effected by the head of liquid above the element, or a vacuum pump 9 may be used. When compressed air is delivered by line 3, valve 11 vents chamber 6 in which filtrate is collected to atmosphere. Filtrate leaves chamber 6 for analysis via valve 16. A water supply 13 is periodically used to flush the apparatus to remove deposited solids. Two such systems may be used alternately to supply samples continuously. In another embodiment a further filtrate chamber (20) is connected to filter element (21, 22) by a one-way valve (24), and filtrate expelled, from chamber (20) only, for analysis. The whole circuit is cleaned by wash water and air pulses, and emptied by air pressure prior to the next filling. The circuits may be timer-controlled.
