Abstract

1,088,524. Liquid filter. W. MAYER, W. KOCH, K. U. M. RUDOLPHI and H. H. MESSNER [trading as SCHUMACHER'S FABRIK]. March 26, 1965 [Jan. 9, 1965], No. 13016/65. Heading B1D. A series of flat or cylindrical filter elements 26 is cleaned by reverse flow of liquid filtrate induced by air trapped in the dome of filtrate outlet compartment 20, by first closing outlet valve 36, supplying further unfiltered liquid to inlet 28 to compress the air further then closing valve 34 and finally opening sludge discharge valve 38. The apparatus may be used in the thickening of sugar syrup, this process being combined gravity separation and withdrawal of liquid through elements 26, the accumulated thick sludge and the solids deposited on elements 26 being withdrawn through valve 37 as described above, at intervals of 3 to 10 minutes, the backwashing step lasting 5 to 25 seconds. A plurality of inlets 28 may be spaced round the housing just below partition 24. Valves 42, 50, 52, 56 are to control inlet and outlet of an acid lye, solvent, liquid containing chlorine or a gaseous cleaning agent during periodic cleaning of the apparatus. The valves 34, 36, 38 may be electrically controlled to operate in the desired sequence. Elements 26 may be filtering stone, metal, synthetic resin, cellulose or asbestos. Working pressures, and filter cake thicknesses are given.
