Crimped stereoregular polypropylene conju gate filaments in which the two components are disposed in side-by-side relationship and are bonded together along the length of the filament are produced by simultaneously melt extruding through the or each orifice of a spinneret into a gaseous cooling zone two polypropylene components one of which (component X) has an intrinsic viscosity [#], (measured in tetralin at 135‹ C.) of 1.4 to 3.0 and a birefringence of 9 x 10<SP>-3</SP> to 27 x 10<SP>-3</SP> and the other of which (component Y) has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.8 to 3.0 and a bi-refringence within a range corresponding to the area, a, b, c, d, e in Fig. 1, which is determined in accordance with the bi-refringence of component X (when the latter is in the form of an undrawn non-composite filament), drawing the resulting composite filaments at a temperature above 80‹ C. and then relaxing the drawn filaments so that they spontaneously develop crimps. Component X may have a bi-refringence of 14 x 10<SP>-3</SP> to 27 x 10<SP>-3</SP> and component Y may have a bi-refringence within a range corresponding to the area c, d, e, f, g, in Fig. 1. The drawn filaments may be subjected to heat treatment below 140‹ C. under tension sufficient to prevent the development of crimps and then to relaxation to develop crimps. After relaxing the drawn filaments to develop crimps, they may thereafter be subjected to tension sufficient to prevent the development of crimps and then further relaxed to develop crimps. The drawn filaments may be relaxed to develop crimps, then drawn at a draw ratio lower than that used in the first drawing step and finally again relaxed to redevelop crimps. The drawing of the undrawn filaments may be effected at a draw ratio of 0.4 to 0.9 time the maximum draw ratio. The undrawn filaments may be drawn at 100 to 140‹ C. The tension treatment and/or the redrawing step may be effected at a temperature within the range of room temperature to 130‹ C.
