Abstract

889,144. Drawing polyamide yarns. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 12, 1957], No. 28654/58. Drawings to Specification. Addition to 811,349. Class 2(2) A polyamide yarn is drawn in two or more stages, the first stage being such that the ratio of drawn length to undrawn length R 1 is determined by the equation R 1 (1+22.2B+284B<SP>2</SP>)=3À6Œ0À5 where B is the birefringence of the undrawn yarn. The yarn may be packaged prior to the first drawing stage. A freshly spun polyamide yarn may be drawn in two or more stages, the first stage being such that R 1 is determined by the equation R 1 (1+ 22.2B+ 284B <SP>2</SP>)=4À1 Œ 1À1 and the freshly spun yarn may be packaged following the first drawing stage. The areas defined by the above equations include part of the area defined by the equation set out in Claim 1 of the parent Specification, and the areas of overlap are specifically disclaimed. Desirably, the second drawing stage immediately follows the first drawing stage. Preferred polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide and polycaproamide and the polyamide yarn may have a second order transition temperature of about 50‹C. and a force-to-draw transition temperature in the vicinity of 150‹C. The first drawing step may be conducted at a temperature between the second-order transition temperature and the force-to-draw transition temperature, and the additional drawing steps at a temperature above the force-to-draw transition temperature but below the melting point of the polyamide, preferably at a temperature of at least 20‹C. below the melting temperature of the polyamide. In a preferred method, the amount in ‹C. by which the, temperature of the first drawing step exceeds the second-order transition temperature is equal to about two to ten times the rate of travel of the filaments into the drawing step in hundreds of yards per minute. Specifications 461,236, 461,237, 576,647 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,289,377 and 2,533,013 also are referred to.
