Abstract

A method of reducing the coefficient of friction at surfaces of cured elastomeric products comprises the steps of contacting the surfaces to be treated with at least one compound containing a carboxylic acid group and capable of addition polymerization, initiating a free-radical reaction on the contacted surfaces so as to cause chemical combination and/or physical integration of the compounds and the elastomeric surface and to cause polymerization of the compounds to occur, and subjecting the contacted surfaces to a fluorinating agent. In one embodiment, the elastomer is (a) contacted with the monomer and exposed to ionizing radiation or (b) contacted with the monomer containing a thermal initiator and heated, prior to contacting the elastomer with SF4, a mixture of NaF and SCl2, or another fluorinating agent. In a second embodiment, the elastomer is contacted with the monomer in the presence of a fluorinating agent and heated under pressure, in which case the said agent initiates polymerization. Acrylic acid is employed as monomer in all the examples, in which slabs of elastomer are washed with soap and water and rinsed with acetone prior to being soaked in monomer, exposed to U.V. light and then heated with SF4 (Examples 1 to 4), soaked in monomer containing benzoyl peroxide, heated and then further heated with SF4 (Example 5), soaked in monomer, exposed to U.V. and then heated with SF4-BF3 complex (Example 6), or exposed to a fluorinating atmosphere generated by the monomer and SF4 complex (Examples 7 to 10), SF4 and BF3-SF4 complex (Example 11) or SCl2 and NaF (Example 12). The elastomers employed are acrylonitrile rubber (Examples 1, 5 to 7 and 11), neoprene (Examples 2, 9 and 11), natural rubber (Examples 3, 8 and 12) and SBR rubber (Examples 4, 10 and 12).
