Abstract
A method of reducing the coefficient of friction at surfaces of cured elastomeric products consists substantially of contacting the surfaces to be treated with at least one compound capable of addition polymerization and either (a) subjecting the contacted surfaces to ultra-violet or gamma radiation, or (b) incorporating a thermal polymerization initiator into the contacting compound and subjecting the contacted surfaces to the action of heat, the steps (a) or (b) being carried out in a manner to cause chemical combination and/or physical integration at the said surfaces of the contacting compounds with the elastomeric material and to cause polymerization of the contacting compounds. The elastomeric materials, e.g. elastomers containing residual unsaturation such as natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, SBR and polybutadienes and virtually saturated elastomers such as butyl rubber, silicone rubber, ethylene-propylene rubbers, and polyurethanes are treated with vinyl and vinylidene monomers or oligomers. The unsaturated elastomers may be treated with fluorine- or chlorine-containing monomers. In the examples, slabs of the elastomers are washed with soap and water and rinsed with acetone prior to being soaked in monomer or monomer solution and exposed to U.V. light or heated. The elastomers, monomers, solvents and catalysts used are as follows: (1) natural rubber and styrene, (2) neoprene and methyl methacrylate, (3) SBR and n-butyl acrylate, (4) natural rubber, ethyl acrylate and benzoyl peroxide, (5) acrylonitrile rubber, acrylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, (6) natural rubber, methyl acrylate and azobisisobutyronitrile, (7) natural rubber, n-perfluorobutyl acrylate and benzene, (8) natural rubber, perfluoropropylene and toluene, (9) acrylonitrile rubber, perfluoropropylene, toluene and benzoyl peroxide, (10) natural rubber, n-perfluorobutyl acrylate, toluene and benzoyl peroxide, (11) acrylonitrile rubber, n-perfluorobutyl acrylate, toluene and azobisisobutyronitrile, (12) neoprene, perfluoropropylene, toluene and azobisisobutyronitrile, (13) to (15) natural rubbers acrylonitrile rubber or neoprene and perchloroethylene and (16) to (18) natural rubber, neoprene or SBR and trichloroethylene. In Examples 13 to 18, the soaking of the slab in monomer and exposure to U.V. light are repeated.
