Abstract

A method of addition-polymerizing comprising treating a monomer or mixture of monomers such as vinyl chloride, acrylic nitrile, tetrafluoroethylene and chlorofluoroethylene, with gamma radiation wherein the stream of the compound or composition successively passes through a space irradiated with gamma rays and through a separating means to remove the polymer formed and returning the unpolymerized compound or composition into the stream passing to the irradiated space. The gamma radiation souce may comprise two or more sources of different radio-active intensity and the reactions may be carried out in the presence or the absence of solvent or dispersant. Preferably where the polymer is formed in the presence of a solvent the polymer should be insoluble. The reaction may be catalytic. French Specification 1,104,262 is referred to.ALSO:A method of addition-polymerizing comprising treating a monomer or mixture of monomers, such as vinyl chloride, acrylic nitrile, tetrafluoroethylene and chlorofluoroethylene, with gamma radiation wherein the stream of the compound or composition sucsessively passes through a space irradiated with gamma rays and through a separating means to remove the polymer formed and returning the unpolymerized compound or composition into the stream passing to the irradiated space. The gamma radiation source may comprise two or more sources of different radio-active intensity and the reactions may be carried out in the presence or the absence of solvent or dispersent. Preferably where the polymer is formed in the presence of a solvent the polymer should be insoluble. The reaction may be catalytic, e.g. benzoyl peroxide may be present. French Specification 1,104,262 is referred to.
