Abstract

A coated abrasive material for electrolytic grinding comprises a woven backing material, e.g. cotton, of which at least the front surface is electrically non-conductive, a plurality of electrically non-conductive abrasive grains adhesively bonded to the said front surface and an electrically conductive layer of material overlying the said front surface and bonded thereto, the abrasive grains protruding through and above the electrically conductive layer at least when the abrasive material is used. The adhesive may be a phenolic resin or a blend of epoxy ester and polyamide resin. The conductive layer may be a laminated foil or a metal coating applied as by metal spray, vacuum metallizing or electroplating. The metal may be aluminium, copper, tin or lead. The abrasive grains may be permitted to protrude by mechanical abrasion or by deplating by electrolytic means. A plurality of perforations may extend through the backing and the electrically conductive layer. The material may be in the form of a belt or disc. The belt may have the abrasive particles only along a strip centred along the median line and have uncoated margins on the band the electrically conductive layer comprising the strip of abrasive grains and the uncoated margin.ALSO:A coated abrasive material for electrolytic grinding comprises a woven backing material, e.g. cotton, of which at least the front surface is electrically non-conductive, a plurality of electrically non-conductive abrasive grains adhesively bonded to the said front surface and an electrically conductive layer of material overlying the said front surface and bonded thereto, the abrasive grains protruding through and above the electrically conductive layer at least when the abrasive material is used. The conductive layer may be a laminated foil or a metal coating applied as by metal spray, vacuum metallizing or electro-plating. The metal may be aluminium, copper, tin, or lead. The abrasive grains may be permitted to protrude by mechanical abrasion or by deplating by electrolytic means, e.g. with NaCl electrolytic for copper. A plurality of perforations may extend through the backing and the electrically conductive layer. The material may be in the form of a belt or disc. The belt may have the abrasive particles only along a strip centred along the median line and have uncoated margins on the band the electrically conductive layer comprising the strip of abrasive grains and the uncoated margin. Reference is made to the use of non-woven non-conductive backings, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or a phenolic tube.
