Abstract
1,266,422. Coated tubular article. CHOMERICS Inc. 12 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968 (2)], No. 24135/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division H1] An electrically conductive coating is formed on a heat-shrinkable tubular article by applying to the article, and especially to its inner surface, a fluid composition comprising a polymeric material (see below) and electrically conductive particles having an average particle size of 0.1-100 mils and at least an outer surface of metal and hardening the composition by irradiation, heating or by means of catalysts, the particles and polymeric material each being present in the coating formed in an amount from 20 to 80 volume percent. The polymeric material may be asphalt, natural rubber, polyolefin, polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylate, polyamide, PVC, a silicone adhesive or rubber, or a styreneblocked butadiene polymer. The tubular article may be of suitably oriented polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polyethylene terephthalate and may be spirally wound from a coated flat sheet. The conductive particles may be of solid metal or metal-coated epoxy resin or glass beads, the metal being Al, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Fe, Ag, Au or alloys thereof and may be sliver-plated, copper powder, copper-plated, iron powder or the latter also silver-plated. The fluid composition may also contain particles of silica as filler and may be applied to the tubular article by knife or roller coating, dipping, spraying, padding, pouring or extrusion. The tubular article is effective as a shield for electromagnetic and magnetic energy and may be heat-shrunk onto an insulation-bearing wire or cable or other electronic parts.
