A running, synthetic or natural fibre yarn Y is false-twisted e.g. as part of a crimping process, by passage through a rotating hollow spindle 14 and the tension in the yarn on the entry side of the spindle is automatically maintained the same as the tension on the withdrawal side thereof by use of a tube 42 which is rotated, in response to engagement by the yarn moving from the spindle, and thereby advances the yarn. The spindle 14 carries a twist head 20 in which the emerging upwardly moving yarn is passed around a guide member 26, looped around the tube 42, around guide member 28 and upwardly through bore of tube 42 to a take-up package or a feed roller therefor. Rotation of the belt-driven spindle 14 is transmitted through the frictional engagement of the loop of yarn with tube 42 to rotate the latter at a speed which is less than the spindle speed by an amount predetermined by the drag imposed by springs 48 on ball-bearings 36 the effect of which may be complemented by an adjustably spring-loaded friction brake element (58) acting on an upper cap member 40 or an adjustably positioned C-shaped permanent magnet acting upon a disc (70) of magnetic material carried on an upper extension of the tube 42, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The amount of imposed drag determines the tension at which the yarn passes through the spindle. The speed differential causes the head 20 to wrap yarn around the tube 42 and feed it through the recess 43. If the yarn tension on the entry side changes then the frictional engagement of yarn Y around the tube 42 changes correspondingly and therefore the rate of yarn feed through the tube 42 changes in opposite sense to restore the correct yarn tension.
