Abstract

1,119,877. Protective systems for superconducting apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 June, 1967 [25 July, 1966], No. 33365/66. Heading H2H. In order to limit the current which can be supplied by a transformer 4, the windings of which are of a superconducting material, the secondary winding 3 of the transformer is connected to output terminals T3, T4 by way of a circuit comprising a reactor 6 and a capacitor 7 which is shunted by a saturable type reactor 8 and resistor 9. Thus at normal values of output current from the transformer, the reactor 8 is unsaturated so that the reactor 6 and capacitor 7 resonate to form a low impedance but at abnormal values of current the reactor 8 saturates to upset the resonance, whereupon the LC circuit 6, 7 form a high impedance. If desired, the reactor 6 can also be made of superconducting material and placed in the Dewar vessel 5 with the transformer. In a second embodiment the reactor 6 is omitted and the reactive part of the LC circuit is formed by the transformer.
