Abstract

1,119,495. Ladle nozzles. UNITED STEEL COMPANIES Ltd. 23 May, 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 33815/65. Heading F4B. A nozzle and stopper assembly for use in pouring liquid steel from a bottom pour ladle, wherein raising the stopper forms an annular space 9 which increases in area as the stopper is raised allowing the rate of pouring to be controlled, comprises a nozzle 1 having a bore 2 which has a short frusto-conical part 3, with an included angle of 60 degrees, merging downwardly into a frusto-conical part 4, with an included angle of 47.5 degrees, which in turn merges with another part 5, the part 3 merging upwardly with a flared out portion 10. The stopper 6 has an upper frusto-conical part 7 merging into a lower frusto-conical part 8, with an included angle of 60 degrees, which mates with the surface 3 to seal the ladle. The surface 8 of the stopper merges with a concave surface 12 terminating in an end portion 13 of circular cross-section. The stopper is preferably made from fired carbonaceous alumino-silicate clay and the nozzle of green dried but unfired refractory (e.g. dead-burnt magnesite with at least 85% MgO). The stopper is lifted by means of a lever mechanism attached to a rod 16 which engages a threaded recess 15 in the stopper. The lifting movement is restricted so that the stopper cannot be entirely removed from the nozzle.
