Abstract

<PICT:1119271/C2/1> A cylindrical fluidized bed reactor 1 having a co-axial stationary helical member 6 of less pitch than the depth of the fluidized bed and extending throughout the bed, is used in the manufacture of trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene by burning acetylene with HCl and oxygen in the presence of a catlyst comprising copper chloride (5% Cu) and potassium chloride (2.5%K) supported on microspheroidal alumina. The reactor and the same catalyst is used in the manufacture of 1:2 dichloroethane by the oxychlorination of C2H4. The product contains small amounts of CHCl2-CH2Cl and C2H5Cl.
