Abstract

1,132,446. Chlorinated ethanes and ethylenes. MONSANTO CO. 23 Nov., 1965 [24 Nov., 1964], No. 49688/65. Heading C2C. Dichloroethane is prepared from ethane by reacting chlorine directly with ethane in a first reaction zone in contact with a finely divided inorganic solid at elevated temperatures to produce a gaseous reaction mixture of which the reactive constituents consist predominantly of ethyl chloride and hydrogen chloride, and passing said gaseous reaction mixture, together with oxygen, into a second reaction zone in contact with an oxychlorination catalyst to effect oxidative chlorination of said ethyl chloride to dichloroethane. Trichloroethane and dichloroethylene are obtained as by-products.
