Abstract
1,143,851. Trichloro- and perfluoro-ethylene. DONAU CHEMIE A.G. 7 April, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 15985/67. Heading C2C. Trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene are prepared by passing 1,2-dichloroethane and chlorine together with pentachloroethane over a porous catalyst at elevated temperature. The catalyst may be activated charcoal, e.g. that produced from mineral coal and having a total pore volume of 1À4 to 1À5 c.c./gram and a mean pore radius of 8À5 to 9À5Š. The proportion of perchloroethylene in the product may be increased by passing the trichloroethylene to a second reactor where it is chlorinated to pentachloroethane which is recycled to the first reactor. 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane may be mixed with the reactants and the process may be conducted autothermally (i.e. the heat of chlorination of 1 2-dichloroethane substantially balances the energy required for the splitting of the pentachloroethane). The chlorine used may be generated in situ from hydrogen chloride and oxygen.
