Abstract
is produced by reacting ethylene, O2 + HCl, Cl2 or HCl/Cl2 mixtures as chlorinating agent in the presence of a fluidised bed of particulate oxychlorination catalyst. Increased productivity, reduction in amt. of corrosion of the reactor at the top of the bed, is obtained by maintaining high density in the fluidised bed as evidenced by maintaining high density in the fluidised bed as evidenced by a longitudinal temp. gradient of 11 degrees C - 128 degrees C, pref. 14 degrees C - 56 degrees C more pref. 17 degrees C - 33 degrees C, along the length of the bed starting from a point about 12.7cm. above the reaction initiation position up to the top of the bed. At least 60%, pref. position up to the top of the bed. At least 60%, pref. at least 80% and more pref. at least 90% of the catalyst particles have a particle size of 0.59-0.25mm. the catalyst comprising calcined fullers earth impregnated with polyvalent metal chloride, esp. copper chloride, and an alkali metal chloride, esp. KCl. Examples illustrate the process with respect to different catalyst compns. and particle sizes.
