Abstract

Olefines are chlorinated to 1,2-dichlorinated hydrocarbons by contacting a mixture of olefine, oxygen-containing gas and gaseous HCl with a fluidised bed of cupric chloride deposited on an active alumina support, the catalyst being disposed in a reactor in the shape of an inverted truncated cone, the upper periphery of which is connected to a cylindrical vessel, the apex of the cone having an angle of 5-15 degrees, the ratio of the larger to the smaller diameter of the cone being from 2:1 to 3:1, and the length of the cylindrical vessel being approximately one-fifth of the length of the truncated cone; the catalyst being employed in such amount that in the nonfluidised condition it fills approximately three-quarters of volume of the truncated cone and when fluidised it fills the cone substantially completely.
