Abstract
1,2-Dichloroethane is prepared by the oxy-chlorination of ethylene with hydrogen chloride in the presence of oxygen or a gas containing oxygen, such as air, over a stationary catalyst which favours the oxidation of hydrogen chloride, wherein the gaseous reactants are diluted, before entering the reaction zone, with an aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbon of 2-10 carbon atoms, or a monochloro- or dichloro benzene, or a mixture thereof, in an amount that the adiabatic temperature increase in the whole reaction mixture does not exceed 300 DEG C. and that the temperatures appearing in the gas mixture during the reaction are within the range 150-300 DEG C., the diluents used being inert towards the reactants, stable under the reaction conditions, vaporizable under the reaction conditions insofar as liquids are used, and capable of ready separation from the reaction products. Suitable diluents are specified. A suitable catalyst is copper chloride, with or without other metal chlorides.
