Abstract

1,118,597. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 4 Nov., 1965 [5 Nov., 1964; 5 Dec., 1964], No. 46723/65. Heading B5K. Components of polybutene-(1) are united by treating the components with a liquid hydrocarbon and pressing them together at temperatures of 50‹ to 100‹ C. Suitable hydrocarbons are paraffins, such as heptane, gasoline, diesel oil or paraffin oil; aromatics, such as benzene or xylene; cycloaliphatics, such as cyclohexane or isopropylcyclohexane; alkylaromatics, such as tetrapropylenebenzene or dodecylbenzene; or substituted hydrocarbons, such as carbon tetrachloride or chlorobenzene. Polymerizable hydrocarbons, e.g. styrene or α-methylstyrene, may be used. To achieve a more rapid polymerization, 0À001 to 1% of a radical-forming compound may be added to the polymerizable hydrocarbon, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, capryl peroxide, isopropyl percarbonate, p-menthane hydroperoxide, azoisobutyrodinitrile or azodivalerodinitrile. Sensitizers in amounts of 0À1- 1000% with reference to the radical-forming compound may be added to lower the treatment temperature, e.g. sulphites, thiosulphates, hydrazine, mercaptan, methanol, oxalic acid, polyhydric alcohols or ferrous sulphate. The liquid hydrocarbon may contain polybutene-(1) dissolved therein, e.g. a 5% solution of polybutene-(1) in heptane or benzene. The hydrocarbon may be applied by brushing on or by dipping the components to be united therein. Preferably, both components are treated and may be kept in the air from 1-10 minutes before being brought together so that a preliminary swelling of the adhesive surfaces takes place and excess solvent evaporates. Alternatively, only one component is treated with the hydrocarbon. The solvent is preferably heated, e.g. to boiling point. A pressure of 5-20 atmospheres gauge is applied to the components. The components may be pipes, sheets, plates or films.
