Abstract
1,118,045. Papermaking; non-woven fabrics. KALLE. A.G. 14 June. 1965 [16 June, 1964], No. 24977/65. Heading D1R, D2A and D2B. Non-woven fabrics are made by distributing fabric-forming fibres that consist of or include synthetic fibres in a dispersion in an aqueous liquid of a gas or water-immiscible liquid, introducing the mixture on to a fluid-permeable support for the fibres and removing liquid through the support. The synthetic fibres may be of polyester, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyolefine or polyurethane. These fibres may be used separately or mixed with one another or with natural cellulosic fibres, wool, leather fibres, or fibres of regenerated cellulose or inorganic materials, e.g. glass, asbestos or slag wool. The fibres may differ in length and may be crimped or capable of being shrunk or crimped. They may be of, e.g. triangular, star-shaped, elliptical or H- shaped cross section. Some of the fibres may be capable of being rendered adhesive by heat or a swelling agent. The dispersion medium may also contain solids, e.g. pigments, binders in the form of dispersions or latices, a polymeric binder in the dissolved state, or a dispersing and thickening agent. Dispersing agents referred to are: potassium oleate and morpholine polyacrylate, and thickening agents are: polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide, gelatine and methylcellulose. Two or more layers may be deposited separately on the support, and the fibres of the successive layers may differ in length or titre. The water-immiscible liquid may be toluene, chlorobenzene or Diesel oil; or the gas may be air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide, which may be generated in situ, e.g. by dispersing the fibres in a solution of a carbonate or an acid, and then adding an acid or a carbonate respectively, or steam which may be generated by raising the temperature or reducing the pressure. The fluid-permeable support may be a woven or knitted fabric or fleece, which is not detached from the deposited layer or layers. A further such support may be superposed on the deposited layer or layers and a further deposition step carried out. As shown, water containing finely dispersed air or oil and dissolved additives is fed from inlet 21 to a mixer 20 with stirrer 23. Fibres are added at 22. The suspension 39 is deposited on an endless travelling belt 25 of sieve fabric via a regulating valve 38 and a distributor 24. The liquid is run off into a drain funnel 26 and a suction funnel 27. An endless belt 31 of sieve fabric presses the web. Thickening and dispersing agents are removed by a spray 34, the wash-water from which drains down a funnel 28 to clean the return run of belt 25, and then passes out through funnel 35. Rollers 33 and 36 help the removal of suspension medium. The web is passed through a drying channel 37 and removed at 40. For materials of high weight per unit area, the sieve fabric rises in the direction in which it runs. The product can be reinforced by needling, sewing, quilting, polymeric binders or the addition of fibres capable of adhesion by heating.
