Abstract

1,117,244. Hearing aids. DAHLBERG ELECTRONICS Inc. 16 Nov., 1965 [23 Sept., 1965], No. 48606/65. Heading H4J. An in-the-ear hearing aid 20 comprises a housing 21, with a front face 22, 23, 24 shaped to rest against the concha, and a cap 82 for insertion in the ear canal. The housing 21 and cap 82 are flexibly joined by a retainer (56), Fig. 7 (not shown), covered with silicone rubber (62), Figs. 1, 4 (not shown). The housing 21 is divided into compartments 25, 26, 27. In compartment 25 is a microphone 45 shock-mounted by rubber supports 47. The microphone 45 has an aperture 46 adjacent a grille 35 in the housing 21. Another aperture 37 of the compartment accommodates a volume control 40 adjustable by a wheel 42. A battery holder 52 is pivotally mounted between walls 30, 31 defining compartment 26. The battery makes contact with conductive plates 50, 51 on the walls 30, 31. The front of the battery holder 52 forms the front portion 23. The compartment 27 contains an amplifier 53 mounted on a circuit board 54. The retainer (56) is of brass, is generally cupshaped and has two opposed fingers 60, 61. The silicone rubber covering (62) includes a flexible link 65 vulcanized to an anchor plate 66 (see also Figs. 4, 6, not shown). The portion 22 of the front face comprises a cover 68 and clamp 70 (see also Fig. 4, not shown) in which the flexible link 65 is contained. An elongate receiver 74 is held by the opposed fingers 60, 61 in grooves in the cap 82. Wires 90 are provided to one end of the receiver 74 and the other end has an acoustic output aperture 75. An umbrella-shaped tip 85, acting as an ear-wax guard, has a stud 86, the end of which terminates in a ball 87. This ball is frictionally held in a double tapered aperture 83 in the end of the cap 82. The tip 85 is spaced from the end of the cap by radial protrusions 88. When inserted in the ear, the angle between the receiver 74 and the wall portion 23 of the battery holder 52 closely approximates to the angle the ear canal makes to the neighbouring surface of the external ear.
