Abstract

In a drawing frame e.g. for doubling and drafting cotton and sliver, the rolls of each pair of hard-surfaced, high-speed, adjustably spring-loaded drafting rolls are fluted, both the flutes and the intervening valleys are radiussed and so formed that the cross-sectional profile of the roll surface is smoothly curved, and the radii of curvature of the flutes and valleys are equal to or greater than the spacing of the tips of the flutes and the bottom of the valleys from the pitch line of the roll. Each flute and valley of each roll of a pair lies respectively on a helix coaxial with the roll, the helices of the two rolls of each pair are of equal pitch angle but of opposite hand, and the flutes and valleys loosely intermesh. The difference between the valley portion radius of curvature and the flute tip radius of curvature of the pairs of rolls decreases from the back rolls to the front rolls in correspondence with the thickness of the fibre mass passing between successive pairs of rolls and approximately according to the draft ratio therebetween. The fluted rolls also apply a crushing or "purifying" pressure on the fibres simultaneously with drafting and without loss of control thereof.
