Abstract
In a process for the production of sliver in which a carded web is fed direct from one or more cards to a drawing frame, the or each card, has two or more doffing cylinders the wire of which has spaced teeth 23, Fig. 2 (not shown) with a small front angle, of less than 60 DEG to increase the output of each card. Webs from the doffers of a card are fed to one or two rolls to be doubled, to two rows of rods to be folded into a W shape, and then to calendar rolls. If more than one card is used the folded webs are laid on top of one another. To obtain a blended product slivers of other fibres may be added to the folded web(s) before drawing. The speed of the drafting rolls are controlled by sliver thickness measuring rolls (Fig. 10 not shown) situated upstream of the drafting rolls and comprising a bottom fluted roll and a gang of top rolls which through individual pivoted levers produce electrical signals in a gang of differential transformers. The signals are added and fed to an electrohydraulic actuator which varies the degree of draft. A single motor is provided to drive the drafting rolls through one clutch and the carding cylinder(s) through a second, the doffers being driven from their carding cylinder through a two speed transmission incorporating a third clutch, a switch being provided to actuate the first and third clutch together.
