Abstract
1,116,722. Determining physical qualities. SPHERE INVESTMENTS Ltd. Aug. 24,1965 [Aug. 26,1964], No. 36207/65. Addition to 1, 009, 597. Heading G1N. In sorting apparatus of the type described in the parent Specification, the spring electrodes 104 are mounted on the opposite side of the path to the trajectory plate 17 and an arc discharge current between one of the spring electrodes and a conductive portion of the trajectory plate or between a conductive portion of the trajectory plate and a flat electrode embedded in a non-conductive part of the trajectory plate is initiated or interrupted by movement of an appropriate body past the electrodes thereby controlling an associated air blast nozzle to direct the body to an appropriate one of two conveyer belts (not shown). The spring electrodes are critically damped and are spaced across the whole width of the path. They may be grouped in pairs, each group controlling one nozzle. The electrodes may be energized with high voltage D. C., A. C. or pulses in which case the duration of the air blast may be controlled in accordance with the number of pulses of the spark discharge or interruption. The medium in which the particles move may be oil or gas instead of air. In the case of discharge being interrupted by the bodies, photo-cell means may be used to initiate discharge on the approach of a body to the electrodes. Photo-cells may also be used to control the air blast nozzles in which case a signal from an electrode may inhibit the blast from an appropriate nozzle.
