Abstract
1,116,688. Thermal switches. NIKKO DENKI SEISAKUSHO Ltd. 24 Sept., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964 (2)], No. 40787/65. Heading H1N An electric circuit breaker comprises a resiliently mounted moving contact S1 held against fixed contact S2 by a current carrying hot wire 2 which, on expansion due to heating by overcurrent, allows the resilient mounting to snap open the contacts. In the first embodiment, the resilient mounting is provided by a U-shaped resilient strip 4 held by hot wire 2 against its normal downwards biasing which is restored with a snap action due to the resilience of the strip when hot wire 2 expands. Resetting is by button 3 acting through arm 5 with twin projections 8 bearing on the legs of strip 4, depression of which restores the original curvature and release of which allows the strip 4 to move upwards to close the contacts. In the second embodiment, Figs. 5, 6, 7 (not shown), the resilient mounting is provided by resilient strip (103) and resilient arms (112, 113), arm (113) being held by hot wire (102) against its normal outward bias holding strip (103) downwards against its normal bias which is restored when hot wire (102) expands, the action being assisted by the current flowing in opposite direction in strip (103) and strip (104) carrying the fixed contact. Resetting is by push (106), which, on depression, restores the downward bias of strip (103), and, on release allows the contacts to close. In both embodiments, adjustment of operating current is by adjusting the tension of the hot wire.
