1,116,494. Ventilating tunnels. SIR BRUCE WHITE, W. E. GELSON, A. H. BECKETT, and J. W. T. TAPP. 31 Oct., 1966 [18 Nov., 1965], No. 49064/65. Heading F4V. A ventilation system for tunnels comprises several air conditioning units spaced along the tunnel oeiling. Warm exhaust air from the tunnel enters a heat exchanger 20 via an intake 24 by convection. It is passed over the catalyst 38 which oxidizes the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide being separated by gravity from the remaining gases, collected at 32, and pumped from the tunnel via a pipe 36. The gases are cooled by passing over coils 26 of the heat exchanger. Condensed water is removed from a reservoir 28. The coils 26 are supplied with a mixture of liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen, the fraction of nitrogen being such as to give the desired oxygen enrichment as the mixture is partly boiled off and fed through a pipe 42 to be mixed with the air output in a conduit 40. In a modification, the carbon dioxide is removed from the heat exchanger 20 as a solid by a screw device.
