Abstract

Austenitic steels particularly suitable for the manufacture of I.C. poppet valves (see Division B3) have the following percentage compositions: - <TABS:1116279/C6-C7/1> The steel may be solution heat-treated at 1050-1275 DEG C, after which it is induction-heated at a rate greater than 50 DEG C/min from 600 DEG C onwards to a like forging temperature. A forged valve having a composition of steel 3 may be precipitation heat-treated at 675 DEG C for 6 hours. In known methods of valve production, the solution heat treatment followed if desired by precipitation treatment at 600-850 DEG C is carried out subsequent to the forging operation.
