Abstract

1,116,208. Hot water supply systems. SPIRAXSARCO Ltd. 20 April, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 18608/65. Heading F4A. The finned or plain U or Field tube heating element 11 of a hot water storage tank 10 is surrounded by a shroud 16 through which water, from either cold water feed pipe 19 or water return flow pipe 21, passes to be preheated prior to discharge into the body of the tank. A thermostat 15 controls the supply of the heating medium, which is either steam or water, through valve 14 to element 11. Hot water is drawn off from the top of the tank 10 through line 23 by pump 25 to supply hot water draw off connections 24, and also through line 27, the surplus being returned through water return flow pipe 21. When there is no draw off of water from the system, pump 25 acts to circulate water from the top of the tank 10 through lines 23, 21 and shroud 16 to maintain the temperature of the water. The shroud and/or the heating element are provided with baffles to increase the rate of heat transfer. When using steam as the heating medium (Fig. 2) both the main steam line (30) and the condensate return line (32) may be included within the shroud (35). The shroud may alternatively be located about an electric heating element, the thermostat in this case controlling the power supply thereto.
