Abstract
The invention comprises 3-amino-2,1-benzoisothiazoles of the formula <FORM:1115780/C2/1> where X and Y are the same or different and represent alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, primary amino or halogen groups and, when Y is nitro or amino, X may denote hydrogen. The compounds are made by reacting o-aminothiobenzamides of the formula <FORM:1115780/C2/2> with a two-equivalent oxidizing agent or oxidation potential is greater than 0.6 volt in the presence of an inert solvent or suspension media at - 20 DEG to +150 DEG C. Specified oxidizing agents are hydrogen peroxide, Caro's acid, persulphuric, peracetic, perchloric and perboric acids, bromine, chlorine, sulphuryl chloride, sulphur dichloride, chromic acid, ozone, hypochlorous, perphthalic and perbenzoic acids. If a strong acid is used as solvent or oxidizing agent, the product is obtained in the form of a salt which is treated with alkaline reagent to liberate the free base. Examples relate to the preparation of 5,7-dibromo-, 5-nitro-, and 5-nitro-7-bromo-3amino -2,1-benzoisothiazoles and 3,5-diamino2,1-benzoisothiazole. The thioamides of Formula II used as starting materials may be made by reacting the corresponding o-aminobenzonitriles with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of ammonia. Examples describe the preparation of 3,5-dibromo- and 5-amino-anthranilic thioamide and 2-amino-3-bromo -5-nitrothiobenzamide. 2,5-Diaminobenzonitrile is prepared by reducing 5-nitro-2-aminobenzonitrile with Raney nickel and hydrazine.
