Abstract

Organic thiuram monosulphides are prepared by oxidising a salt of a compound of the formula <FORM:0578684/IV/1> or R3NCS.SH, where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or the same or different substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or cycloalkyl groups and R3 is the residue of a heterocyclic group which includes nitrogen in the ring, in the presence of a soluble cyanide. The dithiocarbamates derived from the following amines may be used: dimethyl-, diethyl-, di-n-propyl-, diisopropyl-, methylethyl-, n-propylmethyl-, isopropylethyl-, dicyclohexyl-, methylcyclohexyl-, ethylcyclohexyl-amines, piperidine, a -or b - or g -pipecolines, morpholine and piperazines. Salts of the compound R3NCSSH which may be used are the ammonia, alkali metal or organic nitrogen base salts. Suitable oxidising agents include water-soluble persalts such as ammonium or alkali metal-persulphates, perborates, percarbonates or perphosphates. Hydrogen peroxide, nitrous acid, ferricyanide, halogens, hypochlorites or hypobromites may also be used. The sulphur compounds may be added per se or formed in situ. In the examples: (1) sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate is prepared from dimethylaniline, caustic soda and carbon bisulphide and oxidised in the presence of sodium cyanide with (a) ammonium persulphate, (b) acid hydrogen peroxide to give tetramethylthiuram monosulphide; (2) piperidine is treated with caustic soda and carbon bisulphide followed by oxidation with ammonium persulphate in the presence of sodium cyanide to give dipentamethylenethiuram monosulphide; (3) morpholine is similarly treated.
