1,114,518. Inductive signalling; transponder apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 6 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 20125/66. Headings H4U and H4L. [Also in Division B7] In a system for identifying vehicles, e.g. railway wagons, as they pass a given point, each wagon 10 carries a transponder comprising a plurality of piezo-electric crystals 16, each tuned to a different frequency and connected in parallel to a loop aerial 18. A stationary transmitting loop 20 is positioned between the rails 12 and is connected to a transmitter 24 and via gate to a receiver 26. At the transmitter, pulses are generated at 28, shaped at 30 and modulate a carrier of about 2 Mc/s. at 32, the input to the receiver being blocked for the duration of each pulse from shaper 30. This excites the crystals 16 in the transponder and they continue to oscillate for a short time when the pulse from the transmitter ceases, the resulting signals being transmitted via loops 18, 20 to the receiver 26. Each wagon is allotted a characteristic combination of frequencies which energize corresponding crystals 40 at the receiver and via detectors 42 operate appropriate indicators 44.
