Abstract
1354947 Transponders STIFTELSEN INSTITUTET FOR MIKROVAGSTEKNIK VIO TEKNISKA HOGSKOLAN I STOCKHOLM 15 Oct 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 48168/71 Heading H4L A mobile transmitter 26, 27 receives a signal from a monitor station 20, multiplies it with a non-linear device 26, applies a coding modulation, and retransmits to a receiver 23 at the monitor station which decodes at 24 and thereby identifies the mobile transmitter. The system is used for traffic identification purposes (Fig. 1, not shown). The frequency multiplier 26 employs a varactor diode, which doubles the frequency in the example given. The coding involves selected separations of pulses in a train; and the received and transmitted frequencies are 10 and 20 GHz respectively. The mobile transmitter may be passive (Fig. 3, not shown), the received signal from the monitor station having its frequency cyclically varied over a given range, for example, 9 to 10 GHz, the doubled frequency of the transmitted frequency consequently varying cyclically between 18 and 20 GHz. The coding is effected by parallel-connected series resonant circuits using unterminated transmission lines (Fig. 4, not shown) arranged 37 to reduce the amplitude of either the received or the transmitted signals at the resonant frequencies, these being selected to be within the appropriate range of cyclic variation. The signal received at the monitor (Fig. 6, not shown) is supplied to a registration unit 24 which identifies the coding.
