Abstract
1,113,548. Metal strip feeds; shearing; straightening. I. UNGERER. 13 Feb., 1967 [20 Aug., 1966], No. 6813/67. Headings B3E and B3W. An installation for straightening and dividing a metal strip 3 comprises a stationary shear 4 and straightening rolls 2 which feed the strip and is characterized in that the rolls are driven by an hydraulic motor which is connected to a fluid pressure pump by two ducts of different cross-sectional areas, the smaller duct supplying pressure fluid to drive the rolls at a low speed and the larger duct combining with the smaller duct to drive the rolls at a higher normal speed. The motor (8), Fig. 2 (not shown), is connected to the pump (7) by large and small ducts each having an associated return line, and each of the four lines containing an electromagnetically operated stop valve (13, 14, 23, 24). The shear 4 is also connected to the pump, through a reversing switch (27). Operation.-With all the valves open, fluid is supplied to the motor (8) through both the large and small ducts to drive the rolls at the normal speed. When the leading end of the strip reaches a first photo-electric cell 5, the valves (13, 14) are closed and shut off the large supply duct and its return line. The small duct continues to supply fluid at 5% of the previous rate, until the leading end of the strip reaches the photo-cell 6 which causes the remaining valves (23, 24) to be shut to stop the rolls and apply a brake. Fluid from the pump (7) then passes to the shear 4. At the end of the shearing cycle the valves (13, 14, 23 and 24) are reopened and the cut-off length of strip is removed by a conveyer. In a modification the valves associated with the large duct are closed when the leading end of the strip reaches a photo-cell downstream of the shear and simultaneously an adjustable time-delay device is started which closes the valves associated with the small duet after a predetermined time interval.
