Abstract
1422869 Feeding metal strip; measuring workpieces A R ST DENIS 27 Feb 1973 [29 Feb 1972] 9503/73 Headings B3W and B3B Metal strip is fed from a coil 13 intermittently to a power press (not shown) by at least one pair of ribbed feed rolls 31, 32 driven by an hydraulic motor (35) (Fig. 2, not shown) powered by an hydraulic pump 60. A spring-urged roller 44 urges the strip against a measuring wheel (not shown) which is mounted on a shaft carrying a photo-electric rotary transducer 43 connected to an electronic counter 47. The counter 47 controls solenoid-actuated valves 63-65 in fluid conduits connecting the pump to the motor. In operation, at the start of the feed stroke, all the valves are actuated so that two return paths, through valves 64 and 65, are open for fluid flow from the motor and the strip is advanced at maximum speed. When a predetermined substantial portion of the feed increment has passed the measuring wheel, the valve 65 is closed so that only the fluid return path which includes a flow control device (70), Fig. 6 (not shown), is open and the feed speed is reduced. When the complete feed increment passes the measuring wheel, the counter 47 closes valves 63, 64 too, ending fluid flow to the motor and preventing strip movement in feed or return directions. A second solenoid (SOL 4) in valve 63, Fig. 6, not shown, is used only for reversing the direction of travel when an operator is manually jogging the device into alignment for automatic operation. Upstream of the measuring wheel are straightening rolls 49, 50 and vertically mounted guide rollers 57 adjustable along a slot in a box beam 55. The rolls 31, 32 are connected by gears (33), (34), Fig. 2; alternatively a motor may be provided for each roll.
