Abstract

1,147,255. Grinding. CARBORUNDUM CO. 7 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36175/67. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G3] A control system for a grinding machine having (i) an abrasive belt, (ii) an electric motor for driving said abrasive belt, and (iii) an infeed roller engageable with and rotatable by a workpiece as it advances thereby, comprises (a) means for generating a signal responsive to current drawn by said motor, (b) means for generating a reference signal, (c) means controlled by said infeed roller for modifying said reference signal to compensate for wear of said abrasive belt, (d) means for comparing said signals, and (e) means responsive to said comparing means for adjusting the grinding pressure of said abrasive belt on the workpiece. An abrasive belt 18 is driven by an electric motor 12. The workpiece W in the form of a continuous strip of stock is advanced from a pay off roll 22 through a tensioning means, over an infeed roll 24, under a guide roll 26, the belt 18 and a guide roll 28, over an outfeed roll 30 to a take-up roll 32. A back up roller 34 is actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 40, the depth of metal removed from the surface of a workpiece depending primarily on the force imposed by the roller. The flow of hydraulic fluid in conduits 42, 44 connected to the cylinder is controlled by an hydraulic servo control valve 46 controlled by a control circuit 48 responsive to the current in the motor 12. The control circuit is similar to that described in Specification 1,142,566, a signal responsive to current drawn by the motor 12 being applied to a control winding 78 of a servo valve control unit 80 and a reference signal being supplied to a control winding 82 of the unit 80. To effect automatic variation of the reference signal to compensate for wear of the belt 18, a program control unit 180 is included in the reference signal circuit. The unit 180 comprises a variable resistor 182 having a movable contact 196 operated by a cam 188 driven by a self synchronous motor 186 driven by a selfsynchronous generator 185 driven, through a variable speed transmission 184, by the infeed roller 24. The cam 188 makes one revolution during the life of an abrasive belt and is shaped to establish an initial low grinding pressure which is rapidly increased at the outset and then increased, by gradually decreasing amounts.
