Abstract

Artificial leather that is pervious to air and water vapour is made by spreading an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl polymer or copolymer and a plasticizer, to which has been added 5 to 40% of a solution of a curable resin in an organic solvent, on a substrate and then gelling the dispersion by heat treatment. The dispersion may be spread on a preliminary substrate and the gelled layer then stripped off and united with a final substrate. The substrate may be a fabric, a fibre web, or a paper web, and the final substrate may be a knitted web. The curable resin may be an alkylated amino resin such as a butylated or propylated urea formaldehyde resin or melamine formaldehyde resin. The plasticizer may be one or more of di-(2-ethyl hexyl)phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalato or di-n-heptyl phthalate, sebacates, azelains, epoxy plasticizers and polymer plasticizers, thickening agents for the aqueous phase may be added to the dispersion e.g. bentonite, as well as fillers, foaming agents, stabilizers, pigments. Suitable solvents for the curable resin mentioned are alcohols such as isopropyl alcohol, or a mixture of an alcohol with an aromatic hydrocarbon e.g. butanolxylene. In the Examples, the dispersions comprise (1) 100 parts of a 4% aqueous methyl or carboxymethyl cellulose, 75 parts of a pigment dispersion containing 3 parts pigment and 72 parts di(2-ethyl hexyl)phthalate plasticizer, 100 parts emulsion type polyvinyl chloride, 3 parts calcium magnesium carbonate stabilizer, 50 parts of a 60% solution of a butylated urea formaldehyde resin in butanol-xylene; (2) as in (1) with 50 parts of a 60% solution of butylated melamine formaldehyde in butanolxylene instead of urea-formaldehyde; (3) as in (1) with 72 parts butyl benzyl phthalate instead of di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate, and 45 parts urea formaldehyde solution; (4) as in (1) with 65 parts of the urea-formaldehyde and 15 parts calcium magnesium carbonate, 25 parts bentonite; (5) 100 parts of a 4% aqueous methyl cellulose solution, 87 parts of a dispersion comprising 64 parts di-n-heptyl phthalate, 17 parts of di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate, 2 parts epoxy stabilizer, 1 part Ba-Cd stabilizer, 3 parts pigment, 100 parts polyvinyl chloride (70% of the particles having a grain size of 0.2 to 0.8 mils), 40 parts polyvinyl chloride (70% particles grain size 2 to 10 mils), 30 parts of a 60% solution of butylated urea-formaldehyde resin in butanolxylene; (6) as in (5) with calcium magnesium carbonate, bentonite and is spread on a rayon cross twill fabric. The leather may be used for foot-wear, clothing and upholstery.
