Abstract

[Also in Division G1] Apparatus for dispensing accurately measured small amounts of liquid comprises a chamber 23 for holding the liquid and having inlet and outlet ducts 42, 34, a flexible filament 43 which extends through the inlet duct and a feeding mechanism 48, 49 for feeding measured lengths of the filament through the inlet duct into the chamber so that a volume of liquid equal to that of the length of the filament fed is expelled through the outlet duct. The filament, such as a fine wire of stainless steel, is wound on a pair of drums 48, 49 the drum 48 being contained within the liquid chamber 23. Both drums are mounted on a shaft 50 which is rotated, via gears 81, 79, 78, by means of a hand-wheel 75. The wire filament is tensioned by means of pulley 68 mounted in a bracket 69 which is loaded by a spring 71. As the wire moves from one pulley to the other, the bracket, which is connected by pins 70 to a slide 53, is moved correspondingly by means of a screwed-shaft 56 coupled to the gear drive. A counter is provided in the apparatus which may be used for checking the capacities of pipettes or capillary tubing.
